Barkindo died late in the evening of July 5. He is 63 years old. Kyari did not name the cause of his death. At the same time, Barkindo was in Nigeria on Tuesday and spoke at an oil and gas conference.
“We have lost our beloved Dr. Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo,” Kyari wrote. “Certainly, this is a huge loss for his immediate family, NNPC, our country Nigeria, OPEC and the global energy community. Funeral information will be announced soon.”
Mohammed Barkindo has been in charge of OPEC since August 2016. He held this position for two terms, his term ending at the end of July. Prior to his appointment as Secretary General, he represented Nigeria in the organization since 1986 – first as a member of this country’s delegation, then as an official representative of Nigeria.
In January, OPEC ministers elected Khaitham Al-Gais, Kuwait’s representative to the organization, as Barkindo’s successor. He shall serve as Secretary General from August 1 for three years.
