Since July 9, the strike could be such that Norway will begin to lose more than half of its daily gas exports.
The Norwegian government has proposed to resolve a labor dispute between the Lederne trade union and the Norwegian Oil and Gas employers ’association over the increase in the wages of gas and oil workers by forced arbitration. As a result, the trade union agreed to end the strike, the Norwegian government announced the other day.

“The parties have not reached a joint solution. Therefore, I have proposed compulsory arbitration on the issue of wages. The announced escalation of the strike in the current situation has critical consequences – both in terms of the energy crisis, and because in the geopolitical situation we face in relation to the war in Europe, ”said Labor and Social Affairs Minister Marte Mjes Persen.
As you know, since July 5, employees of several oil and gas companies in Norway have gone on strike, demanding higher wages in line with inflation.
In the first phase of the strike, work was stopped by three deposits – Gudrun, Oseberg Süd and Oseberg Ost. Employees of several other fields will join the strike on July 6 and July 9. Moreover, from July 9, the scale of the strike could be such that Norway will begin to lose more than half of the daily its gas exports.
“The Ministry of Oil and Energy believes that stopping gas production to the extent that it will lead to this strike in the next few days is unreasonable. Production is falling sharply, and this is extremely critical in a situation where The EU and the UK fully rely on the energy partnership with Norway, ”said Marte Mjes Persen.
According to him, now Norway “must do everything possible to strengthen European energy security and European solidarity against Russian aggression.”
Persen stressed that he was not satisfied with the situation where the government was placed with the responsibility for resolving the conflict.
“In such cases, the parties themselves are responsible for finding a solution,” he said. However, the serious consequences of the potential expansion of the strike “forced me to intervene,” the minister concluded.
It was previously reported that Norway will consider the issue of gas supplies to Ukraine. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stere said this at a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Friday.
