Trevor Noah made sure no one would hurt Will Smith in his opening monologue at the Grammy ceremony on Sunday.
The “Daily Show” host didn’t mention Smith’s name at the opening, but partially overshadowed the actor’s attack on comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars last week. After Smith slapped Rock on stage for joking about Smith’s wife, the actor returned to his seat and shouted at Rock twice to make sure his wife’s name “didn’t fall into your haste and haste.”
When Noah started the Grammy show, he said, “We’re going to dance, we’re going to have fun, we can’t miss people’s names.” He also made various jokes about the stars there.
Noah, for example, joked that Olivia Rodrigo, who opened the show with her hit “Driver’s Patent,” really had to show her real driver’s license to get into the show.
He also expressed shock that Lil Nas X was actually taller than Nas and wondered why no one was asking Billy Elish’s brother Phineas what his last name was.
