More than 3 million hectares of crops are under threat due to low temperatures

Low season temperatures put at least 3.2 million hectares of cultivated areas in 19 regions are under threat.

This was disclosed in a forecast made by the National Center for Disaster Risk Assessment, Prevention and Reduction (Cenepred) of the PCM, to which management had access.

The document said frost and cold are putting crops at risk, with prospects worsening as the winter season approaches.

Most affected regions

One of the most affected regions are Puno, where 642 thousand hectares, Next comes Ancash with 324,000 hectares; then Ayacucho with 288 thousand hectares, Cajamarca with 271 thousand and La Libertad with 227 thousand.

We also reviewed reports National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi), which indicate the harvest of rice, potatoes, hard yellow corn, tangerines or tomatoes.

Humidity created by the season can increase the presence of pests that will affect potato crops in the regions of the Andes, located at an altitude of more than 3 thousand meters above sea level.

For rice, Senamhi warned that the risk would be very low if planting was delayed and the crop was in its ripening phase. Meanwhile, the temperature may delay the growth time by 5-7 months, increasing the cultivation cost.
