Ministry of Economy estimates GDP fall at 16%

Industries where remote work is impossible have suffered the most, the department asserted.

In the first quarter of 2022, Ukraine’s gross domestic product dropped by 16% compared to the same period last year. This was announced yesterday by the Ministry of Economy.

“Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has radically changed our economy. Our forecast for GDP decline in the first quarter of 2022 is 16%, and the annual decline could reach 40%,” said the First Deputy Minister. and Denis Kudin.

According to him, industries where remote work is impossible, in particular, aviation, maritime transportation, and the service sector, where businesses work directly with consumers, have suffered the most.

At the same time, Kudin pointed out that over the past 10 days, the economy as a whole has started to recover, business in safe regions has returned to work, and farmers have started planting.

The Ministry of Economy noted that in the process of restoring the Ukrainian economy, special attention will be paid to supporting industries that directly ensure the livelihoods of citizens and strengthen the defense capacity of the state.

“We are talking about agriculture, food production, retail trade, energy equipment and services, industries working on mobilization orders,” the ministry said.

Remember that the Ukrainian economy will grow sharply next year if the war with Russia ends in the next two months. This forecast was announced by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

At the same time, so far, the Ukrainian authorities estimate the economic collapse at 35% or more.
