Sixteen-year-old Krista Abelsett met John Barnes, then 30, in 2005 at Hammond Bar. It offered him a ride home.

“Instead of driving me home, he took me to his house,” Abelset told WBRZ. “Upon entering, she was raped on the living room sofa.”

Abelsett, now 32, said she became pregnant after the attack. She said most people believed the baby belonged to her boyfriend at the time.

“And I let them believe,” Abelset told the news station.

He inspired the young woman and began to rebuild her life. But in 2011, when Abelset’s daughter was 5, Barnes found out she could have a child and was placed in custody. Abelset said Barnes received 50/50 protection at the time.

WBRZ reported that court documents show that a DNA test was performed to confirm that Barnes was the father. But, even if sex was agreed upon between them – and Abelsetti said no – it is against the law in Louisiana because of Age of Consent There are 17 in the state.

In 2015, Abelsett learned that she could still report rape.

“I wonder if not [report Barnes] “I have nothing to do tomorrow,” he told a local news outlet. “I went to a traumatologist and he said to me: ‘No, you’re going to be 18, you’re going to be 30.’

That same year, Abelsett filed a criminal complaint for the rape of Barnes with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the case is still pending. Abelsett said almost nothing happened nearly a decade ago after the report was submitted.

“He hasn’t been assigned a detective yet and nothing has been investigated,” Abelsett told WBRZ.

Unfortunately, this is not uncommon. There were three cases of four sexual assaults Not reported To the police. According to Piovere, only 13 out of 1000 rape cases Appeal to prosecutors. And only seven Cases lead to judgment.

Judge Barnes granted full custody of the daughter this year after saying Abelsett gave the teenager a cell phone, WBRZ reported.

Court records are inexplicably sealed in connection with the case, according to the publication.

“He threatened me several times and told me he had a connection to the justice system, so it’s best to be careful and take him when he wants,” he recalls. “I didn’t believe it until it happened.”

WBRZ also reported that Barnes ’Gumbeaux Digital Branding company lists the Ponchatula Police Department located in Tangipaho Parish as a client. On Wednesday, the department’s name was not displayed on the corporate site. The site appears to be under construction as well, according to the default page that appears when you click on the free quote option.

Less than 24 hours after Abelsetti’s interview with WBRZ on Monday, District Attorney Scott Perillo confirmed He is considering the case.
