Leading Democrat Fired Over Incumbent Failure In His Own Party –

The primary responsibility of any politician who chairs multiple electoral committees of Democratic or Republican parties is to protect his or her party’s current leaders, whether legislators, governors or members of the state House of Representatives.

This means that sometimes he lacks a place to replace him and instead he spends time and money protecting a vulnerable member. That means helping these members message, hire key personnel, and spend thousands, if not millions, of advertising dollars to help them win re-election.

In general, and for obvious reasons, this does not mean directly challenging one of the members in the first place.

But that’s exactly what New York Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, a veteran House member who now leads the Democratic House campaign, decided this week after the court released potentially new Congressional maps of his home state.

“Although the process of compiling these maps without a legislator is against the will of voters, if the newly announced maps are completed, I will be in New York’s 17th Congressional District,” Maloney said. Written on Twitter on Monday. “NY-17 includes my home and many of the Hudson Valley communities I currently represent.”

The seventeenth college is currently represented by Congressman Monder Jones, a first-term progressive who was one of the first two openly gay blacks elected to Congress. It’s also slightly more friendly to Democrats than District 18: Joe Biden of District 17 won by 10 points in 2020 and District 18 by 8 points.

Malone’s decision is likely to face Jones – whose only available alternative is another incumbent, Rep. Jamal Bowman’s Challenge (DN.Y.) – has led to a significant donibrook within the party. Well described by Politico.

Swing District members are personally considering the resignation of Malone’s Democratic Campaign Committee chairman, despite only six months left before the very difficult by-election. Progressive members are not quietly criticizing it for being “appropriate” which is better for most white suburbs.

“Thin-skin racism is very frustrating here. Is a black man unworthy to represent the borough of Westchester that he currently represents and that will surely win in 2020?” Representative Richie Torres (DNY), another first year progressive, Written on Twitter. “It’s offensive.”

Malone says his motives are innocent: he lives in the 17th district and the district consists of two of the four districts he has represented for ten years. He didn’t want to move the family.

His allies even point out that the original map approved by the state legislature, in which Meloni played a leading role, actually puts him in a more difficult place than the two districts where he can keep it in theory now. (The New York Court of Appeals found that the original map was of a guerrilla who violated the state constitution.)

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Meloni said that “a disrupted process is disrupting the outcome.”

“From my perspective, I’m just running where I’m going,” he said. “If someone else is looking at the district, obviously we’re going to try to work as colleagues and friends, ultimately it’s up to the voters and that should be the case.”

However, critics say Malone’s move sends the wrong message to his fellow Democrats in many areas:

• In the grand scheme of things, the difference between Biden’s +8 area and Biden’s +10 is not very significant. But choosing a safer seat when tasked with securing poor seats for Democrats seems to indicate a lack of confidence in the party’s possibilities.

• At the same time, an incumbent president like Malonia is more likely to take Biden’s +8 seat in a by-election than a newcomer.

• The Democratic Party has explicitly called for an increase in the number of black and Latino members of Congress in recent years, and the challenge of one of the youngest black members of Congress opposes this broader goal.

It is possible that Maloney vs. Jones primer never happens. Instead, Jones could vote in the 19th constituency, the undisputed Democratic seat now held by Bowman. But Bowman, who is also black, is part of a group of progressive lawmakers known as the “detachment” and will almost certainly win the support of the majority of the progressive coalition.

“Trying to oust Bowman would destroy any chance of Monder’s national recognition and likely end his career,” said Max Berger, a progressive strategist who founded the Justice Democrats. Written on Twitter. “A terrible choice.”

There is also a possibility that the whole conversation was controversial. New York State courts have appointed Jonathan Servas, a political scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, as a special master of congressional map design. What it released on Monday is the official draft, and the final version, which will be released on Friday, could vary significantly.

Lawmaker Judge Jeffries (DN.Y.), Malone’s fourth-highest-ranking House Democrat and ally, criticized the map drawn by the special wizard as a racist because several black members of Congress entered in the same jurisdiction.

“The map redistribution project shamelessly targets historic black representation in New York State and puts four black members of Congress in the same constituency,” Jeffrey wrote in a letter to supporters Tuesday. night. “The new map only adds to the free national champion, which targets constituencies represented by members of the black group of Congress. This tactic will make Jim Crowe blush.”
