Some of the ships for sale have already changed names and are registered under different flags, sources said.
Russian shipping company Sovcomflot is selling “about a dozen ships” to buyers in Asia and the Middle East to pay Western banks amid sanctions. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing sources of knowledge.

According to them, Sovcomflot sold five tankers to Koban Shipping of Dubai and four gas carriers to Eastern Pacific Shipping of Singapore. Eastern Pacific paid $ 700 million to the bank that replaced the ships.
Sovcomflot is also in talks with companies, including China Merchants Group, to sell other tankers, sources said. According to them, the real owners of some ships for sale may not be known for some time.
Shipbrokers said some of the ships for sale had changed names and were registered under different flags to ensure insurance.
Sovcomflot had earlier said that “the age ton is offered for sale on the market, as well as ships, its operation does not seem appropriate due to restrictions imposed on the Russian merchant fleet.”
PAO Sovcomflot is the largest shipping company in Russia, one of the world leaders in maritime transportation of liquefied gas, crude oil and petroleum products, as well as maintenance and support of offshore hydrocarbon production.
At the end of February, Sovcomflot’s own and chartered vessel list consisted of 134 vessels. The list includes 108 tankers of various classes, 14 gas carriers and 11 specialized vessels.
It will be recalled that since April 18, the EU has closed all its ports for Russian ships. The exceptions apply only to those ships that sent an SOS (Mayday) signal. Decisions regarding such courts shall be made in each case.
